The mission of the Providenciales Chamber
of Commerce is to ensure a strong, viable economic climate in
Providenciales in particular and the Turks and Caicos Islands
in general and to be the principal advocate for business before
the Turks and Caicos Government. We want to be the leading Organisation
dedicated to creating a climate where business can prosper.
The Providenciales Chamber of
Commerce wants to be the representative of all businesses in
Providenciales. As businesses we have to stand together, especially
when it gets to issues such as crime, duties, bureaucracy, etc.,
because these issues concern all of us, native, expat, large
or small businesses. In the coming weeks and months you will
witness a Chamber PR campaign aimed at getting all businesses
in Providenciales to join the Chamber. Remember: We can only
be as strong and representative as you make us!
Chambers of Commerce and industry
exist in all Western industrialized countries. Chambers of Commerce
represent the common interests of an intersectoral group of business
leaders as well as the interests of national economies in general.
Chambers of Commerce, therefore, clearly differ from professional
associations, each of which represents one sector, and deals
with problems specific to the group.
Three main goals exist in a Chamber
of Commerce:
- To set up the institutions and
the services the business community requires;
- To represent the regional economy
by providing expertise;
- To promote international trade.
The general aims of the Chamber
are:
- To encourage and promote business
in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
- To provide a framework from
which the business community can speak with a unified voice on
issues of concern to all members.
- To provide a forum for the candid
exchange of views between members.
- To improve the standards of
service within all businesses.
- To provide technical expertise
and consulting assistance to all members.
- To foster a better understanding
between the business community and Turks and Caicos Government.
A Chamber must consider from
a common viewpoint all sectors and all sizes of business enterprises
affected by a certain measure. This implies not only that it
must arrive at compromises, but also that it must allow the economy
to develop in a balanced manner in the general interest. This
is why Chambers of Commerce, whether of public or of private
law status, perform an important role in the modern State.
A Chamber of Commerce cannot
fulfill its objective unless it is independent of the State.
It should not be an extension of government policy and administration,
but have the independence necessary to put forward the opinions
and the interests of the business community. The changing economic
situation, which regularly produces new problems and creates
new tasks, necessitates shifts in emphasis in the work of the
Chamber. Only a non-bureaucratic organization can react rapidly
and efficiently to the demands of changing situations.
One of the primary aims of the
Chamber is "to promote and protect the trade, business,
commerce, agriculture, industries and manufactures, and public
welfare of and in the Turks and Caicos Islands".
